French Revolution Conscription

In February 1793, the "Convention Nationale" declared the Nation was in danger due to the war the French Revolution sparked with European monarchies.

Considering volunteer soldiers that had enrolled in the French armies were not sufficient to face the ennemies, the Convention decided to organise a first military conscription of 300,000 men between the ages of 20 to 25.

On 9th March 1793, the arrival of Revolutionary government emissaries in the provinces in view of implementing the conscription was met with a lot of resistance! In addition, some of the provinces' residents had been horrified by the news the King had been beheaded and churches looted and desecrated.

A civil war was about to burst between revolutionaries and the royalist (and catholic) movement! This is just another one of the complex elements of the French Revolution!
