Jacques-René Hebert

Jacques-René Hebert was the leader of one of the most radical factions during the Reign of Terror. His pamphlet “the Père Duchesne” was known for its calls for murder and its very crude language. It was very popular with the “mobs” but also feared by many.

The King and Queen were recurrent targets up to their execution. During the trial of Marie-Antoinette, Hebert went as far as accusing her of committing incest with her young son. After having contributed to sending a great many to the guillotine, Hebert was in turn sentenced to death.

On 13th and 14th of March, he and his supporters were all arrested. Ten days later, while on his way to the scaffolds, Hebert reportedly fainted. Once facing the national razor, he screamed hysterically. The executioner adjusted the blade so it would stop above the neck. The crowd loved the executioner torturing Hebert psychologically three times! Finally, the fourth time, the blade descended all the way.
