Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres

A tribute to Ingres, one of my favorite artists. He passed away on 14 January 1825. He is known for his paintings but also for his superb pencil portrait drawings. He produced 460 of them!

He was a student of Jacques-Louis David (first painter of Napoleon) and like his master, he won the prestigious "Prix de Rome" and studied in Italy for many years where he was commissioned to produce many works of art at a time when parts of Italy were ruled by France.

He is one artist who has never ceased to be critically acclaimed both during his life and ever since. Most of his drawings are very minimalistic, a few very fine strokes capture the essence of the sitter. You can see his work in the Louvre as well as many major museums around the globe.
