Le Corbusier - La Cité Radieuse in Marseille

To commemorate the anniversary of the passing of Le Corbusier on 27 August 1965, I have prepared two posts. I will start with the positive :)

As a teenager, I was fortunate to go on a school trip to visit "La Cité Radieuse" which the master architect built in Marseille. What an introduction to modern architecture it was!

To this day, I still have clear memories of that day! We got to explore the building inside out but also got to visit a “unit” (ie an apartment), and the actual resident and the guide showed us all the elements that made this architecture ground-breaking.

One of the things that struck me was his way of optimising space. All my years living in small apartments in New York and Paris, his vision helped me make the most out of small spaces. A school day trip that had a lifelong lasting impact!

If you don't have the opportunity to visit Marseille, you can still visit a replica of a unit at the Cité de l'Architecture in Paris! Enjoy!
