Legion of Honor

The French Revolution had abolished the privileges and distinctions of the old regime reserved to nobility. Napoleon took it one step further and promoted merit. On 19th May 1802, he created the Legion of Honor.

This medal was not reserved to the military, but could be granted to any citizens who had contributed to the good of the country: Scientists, artists, architects, musicians, authors, manufacturers, inventors, lawyers, members of government or Church were rewarded according to their service to the Nation.

Like a great majority of the 200 reforms and institutions created by Napoleon, the Legion of Honor has lasted over two centuries. In my home, I have the medal my grandfather received for his 48 years of service in the army and the police. Humbling!
