Medieval Louvre Fortress

Recently, visitors asked me to prepare a private tour of the Louvre for them. They wanted to see some of the main works of art, but also understand French history through art. So I obliged!

The first thing I showed them was the medieval remains of the original Louvre fortress dating back to the 1200's. That fortress was brought down during the Renaissance to make way for a new version of the Louvre.

In the 1980's, during the great transformation of the Louvre, parts of the original fortress were excavated and you can see them when visiting the museum.

When entering the "Pavillon Sully", go straight to the "Pavillon de l'Horloge" and get ready to travel back in time!
