Napoleon - Armistice with Royalist Movement

In 1793, the French Revolution had gone more radical and divided France in two: Revolutionaries versus Royalists and Catholics together. While the Vendée region was the stronghold of the "Chouans" (royalist fighters), many other provinces were the setting of the civil war as well.

On 28 December 1799, six weeks after rising to power, Napoleon restored the Catholic church and offered an amnesty to the remaining Royalist and Catholic fighters granted they would cease fire.

Napoleon pacified a country that had been in turmoil for several years. This is a great example of his countless positive and constructive actions that are too often ignored.

Oddly enough, this past week, I passed Saint-Sulpice church and took a picture of this graffiti by the entrance steps! This heart with a cross was the symbol of the Royalist and Catholic movement! Apparently, they're back!!
