Napoleon’s Concordat - Religious Freedom

There are a great number of things we take for granted nowadays. Religious freedom is one of them!

From the moment the Protestant Reform appeared in the 1500's, it sparked religious wars in Europe.

French Kings (with the exception of Henry IV) fought to keep Protestants from creating a state within the state. The Huguenots were forced to convert, or chased, persecuted, murdered, and their villages burned down. But it should be said they reciprocated and were not always the victims!

After the French Revolution desecrated the Catholic Church, First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte sought to restore religion in France. His Concordat was signed during the night of 16th July 1801 with the Pope. It was a great progress and brought religious freedom at last in France.
