Statue of General Desaix

Louis Charles Antoine Desaix died on 14 June 1800 at the battle of Marengo. Napoleon was truly devastated for losing someone he considered not only a brave general but also a loyal friend.

Proof of that is the number of memorials, statues, fountains, paintings dedicated to Desaix which were commissioned during the Empire in Paris and in the provinces.

Sadly the statue Napoleon commissioned to honour Desaix which was placed on the Place des Victoires in Paris was melted upon the Bourbon restoration and replaced by a statue of Louis XIV…
