Camille Desmoulins’ Execution
"The French Revolution devoured its own children"... Camille Desmoulins is greatly responsible for one of the most important moment of the French Revolution: the storming of the Bastille.
Many years before that, while he was studying at Louis-le-Grand college, he befriended a fellow student named Maximilien Robespierre... The latter even became the godfather of Camille's first son about two years before rising to power and unleashing the “Terror" (understand: "mass beheadings").
Camille Desmoulins' great error was to get too close to Georges Danton who at some point was a political rival for Robespierre. All the supporters of Danton followed him to the guillotine, including Camille on 5 April 1794 and his wife Lucile a week later... The French Revolution devoured its own children...
