Eugène Delacroix’ French Revolution Painting
A tribute to Delacroix who was born on 26 April 1798. Nine years after the 1789 French Revolution. You certainly know and recognise his masterwork "Liberty guiding the people". Yet, here is a myth:
Many visitors of the Louvre Museum believe Delacroix' painting depicts the 1789 events. It actually depicts our second Revolution, dated 1830! By now, the artist was 32 years old so he could fathom what was happening and translate it into art.
Another give away is the French flag waved by the lady representing Liberty. The tricolor flag was created after the storming of the Bastille, in other words, when the 1st French Revolution started, no one could have been waving that flag...
