Festival of the Federation
On 14th July 1790, the first year anniversary of the storming of the Bastille was celebrated with the "Fête de la Fédération". In other words, a feast of unity between the King who had agreed to recognize the legitimacy of the National Assembly and his people.
The Marquis de La Fayette was the center of all the attention, pledging allegiance to the Law and the King in the name of the National Guard! Then Louis XVI also pledged allegiance, although no one could hear hear him speak...
In that early stage of the Revolution, the Catholic ⛪️Church had not been victimized just yet, so a bishop was needed for the mass. A figure appeared on the scene: Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord! More simply known as Talleyrand.
Walking up to the altar, Talleyrand - already a cynical character who saw this event as a masquerade - turned to La Fayette and told him: "For Christ sake, please don't make me laugh...!"
