Statue of Georges Danton
On 5 April 1794, Danton had a date with Lady Guillotine! George Danton! The voice of the people! The revolutionary who would bring down the house when he took the floor at the "Convention Nationale".
One account described: "I was struck by his tall stature, athletic shape, the irregularity of his features plowed with smallpox.
His harsh, abrupt, resounding speech, his dramatic gesture, the mobility of his physiognomy, his confident and penetrating gaze, the energy and daring with which his attitude and all his movements were imbued... He presided over the session with the decision, the speed and authority of a man who feels his power."
Danton's statue on Boulevard Saint-Germain captures his massive stature. It was placed there in 1889 to celebrate the first centennial of the French Revolution.
