La Fayette and Washington - First Meeting
No historian can say for sure whether they met on August 1st, 2nd or 3rd. But it really doesn't matter! What matters is what happened and the chemistry that forged a strong bond. In his biography "Washington, a life", American Historian Ron Chernow states:
"Because Washington was childless and drew close to several aides, many biographers have been tempted to turn them into surrogate sons, but the only one who closely matched this description was the Marquis de La Fayette, who eagerly embraced the role." (See page 296).
Washington was childless, La Fayette had lost his father at the age of two. Perfect match!
