Louis Joseph Xavier François de Bourbon - 1st Dauphin

Louis XVI & Marie-Antoinette had a total of four children. Only one of them - their very first daughter - will survive the Revolution. The second son will die in prison at the age of 9... The second daughter died in 1787, within a year of her birth.

The first son, Louis Joseph Xavier François de Bourbon who was initially the Dauphin - aka the heir to the throne - could not have picked a worse time to pass away...

In May 1789, the Estates General that Louis had summoned, gathered at Versailles. They had to adress the famine that was hitting the Kingdom on top of the near bankruptcy of the state.

On 4 June 1789, just a month later, the Dauphin passed away, causing additional distress to a man who should not have been a King in the first place as he was not fit for the role... Would you like to understand the French Revolution?
