Madame du Barry Execution
The infamous Madame du Barry is the last mistress of Louis XV. She was 25 years « old » when she "befriended" the 58 year « young » King... Her origin and reputation did not facilitate her integration at the court of Versailles...
But the King appreciated her « talents »and showered her with priceless gifts, fancy dresses, jewels, a private mansion, etc... While the affair only lasted a few years until Louis XV died, she was set for life.
During the terror phase of the French Revolution, her travelling back and forth between France and England sparked rumours of her being in intelligence with the « emigrates », ie: noble families who had fled and were plotting abroad for the restoration of Monarchy.
She was tried for treason and executed on 8 Dec. 1793 on the Place de la Concorde, steps aways from the beautiful mansion Louis XV offered her... First 3 illustrations and photo are from E. Lubitsch’ 1919 film about her.
