Molière Statue and Fountain
To visitors unfamiliar with his name, I describe Molière as a French Shakespeare who saw the bright side of life and mostly wrote farces. His satires were very popular with both the common people and aristocrats even though the latter were often the butt of the joke.
While being comedies, Molière’s works never failed to also convey philosophical, moral and religious undertones, sometimes sparking thunder from the Catholic Church and censorship from the king. Molière is guilty of over thirty timeless plays filled with colorful characters and brilliant wit.
The date of birth mentioned on his pedestal is actually the date of his christening. Historians agree we do not know Molière ’s exact date of birth. The monument is facing the spot where once stood the house in which the playwright passed away.
