Olympe de Gouges’ Execution
In 1791, lady writer Olympe de Gouges published the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and of the Female Citizen.
Her document was a reaction to the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen written two years by the French National Assembly. She wanted to demonstrate women did not have the same rights as men.
Olympe was also extremely vocal politically and was not afraid to take a stand on several issues against Maximilien Robespierre and the Comity of Public Safety.
Disagreeing with the men in power during the Reign of Terror was not such a good idea… On 3rd November 1793, she was sent to the guillotine.
