Saint-Ferdinand Church
I have a soft spot for old churches, but I can also appreciate modern ones too. By modern in Paris, I mean built in the 1900's... This is Eglise Saint-Ferdinand in the 17th arrondissement. The name Ferdinand refers to Ferdinand-Philippe d'Orléans, son of Louis-Philippe, (the last King of France) who passed away in the vicinity.
On the façade, the tryptic does not represents the Holy Trinity as one would expect. To the right of Christ: Saint-Ferdinand, King of Castilla and Toleda (this Saint was obviously chosen sharing the same name as the son of Louis-Philippe) ; and to the left: Saint-Theresa de Lisieux.
Built from 1937 to 1957, it incorporates neo-byzantine influences to its modern architecture. Inside, the light from the three large cupolas' openings and the low hanging round chandeliers contribute to a warm atmosphere. If you are in the area, this is worth a stop. And if you care to know, this is actually a very active church, they even have their own YouTube channel!
